Risked-based Review

The third step of the review follows a pre-mortem-inspired approach to uncover potential risks.

Risked-based Review

What is a Pre-Mortem?

A pre-mortem critically examines a system by envisioning its future failure. From this hypothetical worst-case scenario, participants ask: What led to the failure? These reasons represent potential risks that can be identified and mitigated today.

Workshop Activities

  1. Identify relevant risks (brainstorming supported by LASR’s standard risks).
  2. Link the identified risks to the system’s key quality attributes.
  3. Assess the risks based on their likelihood and impact.
  4. Quantify the deviation from the review benchmark to determine the gaps.
  5. Plot the assessed system status line (blue line) on the LASR result diagram.

Cards with Standard Risks

A ‘Pre-Mortem on Steroids’ — LASR provides 30+ standard risks across 8 risk areas to guide the risk brainstorming. These cards are available in both English and German.

Risk Assessment

Identified risks are mapped to quality goals and assessed based on their likelihood and impact. The combined score per goal represents the ‘gap’.

Gaps in the Diagram

The assessed risks quantify deviations from the review benchmark, represented as ‘gaps‘ (red lines) in the LASR result diagram. Finally, the system’s evaluated status is plotted as a blue line, offering a clear visual comparison to the target.
