Lean Mission Statement

The first step of the review distills the product’s vision into a lean mission statement. It consists of a set of ‘claims’ that make the system’s goals easy to understand.

Lean Mission Statement

The Landing Page Metaphor

A well-designed landing page presents a software solution concisely, highlighting key features and unique characteristics with clear statements and compelling slogans. Similarly, the LASR review captures the essence of a system by asking: What do we want to achieve with this software?

Framing

At the start of the review, participants define the software system by naming it and clearly specify what the review should include or exclude (in/out). Establishing these boundaries early helps prevent confusion and resolves potential misunderstandings about the review’s scope.

Finding Claims (Brainstorming)

Gather claim ideas by asking: What would be prominently featured on a landing page for your software solution? What are its key features or capabilities? What makes it unique? What expectations do key stakeholders have?

Distilling the Mission Statement

Extract the essence by selecting the 3–4 most important claims from the brainstorming session, e.g. through voting. This shared understanding of the system’s goals sets the foundation for the next LASR step.
